Practicing spoken English with AI as a Portuguese speaker

A good AI app for practicing spoken English lets you talk out loud, answers by voice, corrects you right away and, if you are a Portuguese speaker who is starting out, explains the mistake in Portuguese. There are free and paid options; below are the criteria, the alternatives and where Cláudia fits.

Who is Cláudia for? Adults (18+) who speak Portuguese, mostly in Brazil, and want to practice speaking English, Spanish, French, Italian or German.

Not for: people who don't read Portuguese (the app interface is in Portuguese), people who want to learn Portuguese, and people who need a certificate.

The facts about other apps were checked on their official pages. Links and dates are under “Sources”, at the end.

What to look for

  1. Real voice conversation. You speak out loud and the app answers out loud, instead of only tapping words on the screen.
  2. Instant correction. The app shows the mistake and the right form right after you speak, and asks you to say it again.
  3. Explanations in Portuguese, when you want them. For beginners, understanding why something was wrong makes a difference.
  4. Pronunciation. A score for each word shows exactly what to adjust.
  5. Price in reais and simple cancelling. Check whether it renews automatically and how to cancel before subscribing.
  6. Where it runs. App store, browser or both.

Sounds Portuguese speakers often struggle with

Many Brazilians understand much more English than they can say. When it is time to speak, the stumbling blocks tend to be the same:

An app that corrects you out loud and makes you repeat the right sentence works on exactly these points.

Free options that exist

If your budget is zero, you can start without paying:

General assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Copilot and others) talk about anything, but the path, the level and the correction depend on what you ask for. Cláudia’s comparison with them is in Cláudia, ChatGPT e outras IAs (in Portuguese).

Paid AI conversation apps

Besides Cláudia, there are other paid AI voice conversation apps, such as Praktika, Speak, ELSA Speak and Duolingo’s Max plan, and there is Cambly, with human teachers. Facts, sources and who each one suits are in apps para conversar em inglês em 2026 and in the comparisons (both in Portuguese), and in Cláudia vs Duolingo.

Is there an app that talks with you in English?

Yes. AI conversation apps such as Cláudia answer by voice and correct what you said. General assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini also hold voice conversations.

Is there a free AI app to practice speaking English?

Yes. ChatGPT has voice mode on the free tier, with limits; Google Translate has the Practice feature, in beta; and MEC Idiomas is free for Brazilians with a gov.br account. On Cláudia, the free account is text only.

No. The app, the sign-up and the support are in Portuguese, and plans are paid in Brazilian reais. Cláudia does not teach Portuguese either.

Want to try it?

The sign-up is a short quiz in Portuguese where you say how far along you are in the language. Then you open the conversation and start talking with Cláudia.
